Ancient tribes of Ghana used to consider animals to be sacred. However, when Christianity spread throughout the country worshipping animals started to become less popular. And most of the Mona monkeys in the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary were slaughtered.

In fact, the monkeys in the region were almost killed to the point of extinction.

In 1993, John Mason, a Canadian, convinced the locals to maintain a sanctuary for the monkeys, and the sanctuary has been in operation ever since.

Now it’s forbidden to hunt or attack the monkeys, which includes when they are taking your food. Just embrace it because it can be quite humorous.
