AFRICAN POP CULTURE by Emily Port

Just like in the U.S. driving home from work can be a daunting task in big cities. There is serious traffic that can make a supposed 15-minute car ride turn into an hour or more. However, when I would get rides home with my co-workers, they would show me many of the local music that I have grown to truly enjoy. I would describe this genre of music as hip-hop with a reggae up-beat twist. Here the term for it is “High Life.”

After becoming weirdly obsessed with the music my co-workers played for me, (one of them even made a playlist for me to listen to once I got home) there was one song that never left my mind. I would play it annoyingly at the house and got the song stuck in many of my roommates heads (lol).

One of the last nights in Ghana we went to an outdoor bar where live bands played called Republic. At the bar myself and my fellow “obronis” realized that the artist who sang my favorite song “Kissing me softly,” was at the bar too! Slightly star struck and too nervous to approach her, I made Rachel go up and see if she would take a picture with her. She was so nice and took a ton of pictures with us.

It was so random to see my favorite Ghanaian pop culture artist out and about but it was a memory I will never forget!
