Explore More in the Second Week

By Stella Zhang

At the end of the first week, we moved into our apartment. The apartment is very close to the University of Ghana and we can see very beautiful sunset and university stadium from our balcony. The building manager is very friendly and he told me that he had stayed in China as an English teacher for six years.

I started my internship in Penplusbytes, a non-profit organization working across Africa using a people-centered technology approach in three key areas: governance and accountability, new media and innovations as well as oil, gas, and mining. I attended an online webinar called “Media and Information Literacy (MIL) alumni network launch and micro-grant scheme”, which was organized by Penplusbytes. One of the projects the NGO is working on is MIL, and the webinar is aimed at encouraging alumni members who have benefitted from Penpusbytes’ trainings and programs to make use of their knowledge and skills in MIL while influencing their communities.

I visited the national museum on Friday. As one of the largest and oldest museums in Ghana, there are many fine art objects and collections illustrating Ghanaian history and culture. Collections such as the early stone tools, Komaland Terracotta figurines, Asafo flags and goldweight show me a comprehensive, local history and culture that I was previously unaware of. I am looking forward to exploring more in the next weeks!

  1. Interesting how many small connections you’ve made relating to China in your time so far!
