Covering the WAFU-B U20 Boys Cup

By Kalani Chai-Andrade

It’s been weeks since I returned home from my internship, but the events I covered still linger in my mind. The U20 Boys Cup Final, in particular, remains an unforgettable experience. National teams from across West Africa flocked to the tournament to prove themselves as the region’s next generation of professional footballers. Their efforts boiled down to one day, where only one team could claim the trophy.

Football stood apart from the sports I’d shot before because of the players’ sheer intensity and aggression. None of them were afraid to play physically, and it made for great action photos. With Oregon Ducks sports, moments of physicality are rare, so you have to be ready to catch them. In contrast, the Cup Final was nonstop contact; players pushed, shoved, and tackled at every opportunity.
