This week marked the beginning of my internship experience and the opportunity to gather international work experience in the field I will soon be entering. My work while in Ghana is centered on sports broadcasting at Joy Sports. Housed by The Multimedia Group, Joy Sports is one of its many radio and television programs. Joy Sports focuses on daily news pertaining to the very active sports culture in Ghana, highlighting football, track and field, boxing, tennis, etc.
Every day there are television and radio sports broadcasts, which I have the opportunity to sit in on and observe the talent and control room operations. Story-based projects that I have helped work on thus far have pertained to the 13th African Games being held in Accra in March 2024. This is the first time the games will be hosted in Ghana since the African Games were introduced in 1965. On my first day of fieldwork, we held an interview with the newly announced, Ghanaian track and field coach for the African Games, Elorm Ameakpor. We began our interview at the stadium in which the track competition will take place, on the University of Ghana’s campus. But, to our surprise we were abruptly disrupted by construction workers discontinuing our progress. In attempt to save the concern of audiences on the incomplete stadium, they attempted to confiscate our equipment. The altercation escalated rather quickly and caused various individuals to gather around interested in solving the matter. Eventually we were asked to delete the footage and to complete the interview inside as originally permitted.
Despite the altercation with construction workers and conversations with University of Ghana Sports Director we made our return to the facility the following day. In our second day of work at the stadium, a tour was conducted for the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Nana Apa Abbia Amfio. Additional Sports Directors and Deputy Chairs joined the tour to also see the progress of construction. The games have already been delayed once due to such matters, so it is pertinent that the work meets their December deadlines.
The video below is a report that aired on Joy Sports Wednesday and Thursday, following the tour. I was responsible for the editing as well as the voice over in the piece.
Great stuff Kyla!
Wow, what an entry into the work, Kyla! Seriously, so great to watch the video you worked on and to hear YOUR VOICE!
