At the Daily Guide, Melvin and I usually leave the office around 8 a.m. every day and cover an event that is said to begin at 9 a.m., with a potential second event around 2 p.m. At each press conference or discussion, I take photos of the key speakers and jot down some notes about important moments. Frequently, we are able to find a copy of the main speaker’s speech, which makes adding quotes to the story significantly easier. After the event has concluded, we go back to the Daily Guide office and I write the first draft of the story. At first Melvin would severely edit what I wrote and add a lot of his own words to frame the story to fit his preferences and the requirements of the Daily Guide. Recently, he has done less retyping and instead will recommend a change or add on to what I’ve written. When published, the article will have both our names on it and will consist of my photos and our combined writing.
My favorite story so far, came as a surprise and did not involve going out to cover an event. On a Tuesday the News Editor asked me to interview his relative who is a Ghanaian basketball player currently in Ghana to visit his family. I had twenty minutes to prepare my questions before he arrived at the office. This was an unusual assignment but one I was happy to be a part of because of what a special opportunity it was. This the first article I have written for the Daily Guide where I am the sole author.
Enjoy.
