Tips on Preparing for Media in Ghana by Kevin Wang

It’s time to finally go.

I remember getting accepted into the program about four to five months ago. Time has flown by because I leave for Ghana tomorrow. The last few days have been hectic, from gathering all of the supplies needed for the trip, collecting contact information, and expecting the unknown.

Running around town was stressful and here are some tips for future students:

Plan out which stores have what so you don’t have to run back and forth – I had to do that.

Call stores in advance instead of showing up and not finding what you need.

Ask friends or relatives if they have the items you need instead of buying new ones.

For me, I wish I‘d planned out my scavenger hunt a lot smoother. I had to bounce around from four stores, and it took six hours to get everything. You also have to consider traffic – depending on where you live.

On top of getting everything you need, my family was continually asking for details about the trip. The beginning of spring term, when you have your first Ghana class, take note. Every little detail will matter to your parents and family because they won’t know the information, as you will.

Write down phone numbers – essential when traveling and emergency contact!

Give your family a map of Accra, Ghana, so they’re familiar with the city.

If you have an itinerary, give them that as well.

Information about your internship will ease your family worries as well.

Even though this has been extremely stressful, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. The support I have received from family and friends who are excited for me about this trip, has been great. Soak in the stress, the happy moments, and even the sad moments before leaving. Because once you’re on that plane, it’ll all be worth it.
