While visiting the Anani Memorial School in Nima we were able to watch students perform dances and poems culminating to a final dance where we all joined in. The students were able to speak English, Twi, and French. Outside the school, people from around the community leaned up against the windows to watch the students perform.
Students outside the main classroom would peek in to see the dancing. Some of the younger students not performing even had the urge to dance and attempt to join the routines.
As we walked through the Elmina Castle, our tour guide Ato gave us context as to the situations and conditions the slaves were forced to live in. From the door of no return where they left the continent for good or the main chambers where they were sleeping and eating in a room full of feces and blood. The picture is unable to capture the lingering smell from the castle’s past.
While in the western Volta region of Ghana we visited the Wli waterfalls, home to the tallest waterfall in West Africa. While on the 40-minute hike into the falls we crossed several bridges building our excitement as we reached the falls.
The falls are tucked in the cliffs and suddenly appear. The only sign of their existence before arriving is the sound of the water echoing through the valley below.
The spray from the falls is enough to cover camera lenses and glasses a couple hundred feet away. The power of the falls themselves is enough to knock someone unconscious. Bats hanging on the canyon walls surround the falls giving them an even more mysterious quality.
