The Queen of Ghanaian Sports Broadcasting

By Kyla Morris

This week I had the opportunity to interview the 2021 Sports Reporter of the Year, known as Mavis Amanor to some, but is called Fire Lady by most. She is a reporter and show host for Asempa FM and Adom TV, two shows broadcasted in the local Twi language. She is a star in her field and known by many in the industry. She has worked her way through various positions over the numerous years she has been at The Multimedia Group. In a field full of men, she has made her presence known and continued to pave the way for Ghanaian women in broadcasting bringing her charism, energy, beauty, passion, and hard work to everything she does. She offers new perspectives and stories that men may not have a keen eye for, and she offers more diversity and representation of women. She is now a seasoned reporter and is able to inspire other young women interested in the field. In her line of work, it is easy to get discouraged by the dominant male environment, but Fire Lady lets her passion and love for sports drive her dedication and determination to excel in her craft.

Our conversation focused on the representation of women in the industry and how women are being empowered to pursue such careers. We also discussed the diversity of the organization in which she works and how improvement could impact the work environment as well as audiences. Finally, we discussed what the recruiting process looked like for The Multimedia Group and whether they were actively seeking out valuable women to add to their staff.

With Fire Lady’s history in the organization and the challenges she has had to overcome personally, she had a lot of insightful thoughts and opinions to share. Next week I am looking forward to seeing her in her element and following her as she prepares for her show and reports her various stories.
